Weruva is a family-owned business that aims to feed your pets as if they were part of their own family. All of the dishes are handmade, and you can see the ingredients that they use.

Their recipes meet the standards for the British Retail Consortium (BRC) which is the strictest human processing standard.

Our Weruva dog food review will take a closer look at what makes this brand of dog food stand out from the rest. This company is still fairly young, so not many pet owners may know the brand.

And those who do may only know about the wet food, which Weruva is best known for due to their high-quality ingredients.

We will go over the wet foods available, but also the dry foods so you can keep your dog in the Weruva family if you feel like this dog food brand is the one for your dog.

Who Manufactures Weruva Dog Food?

The family-run business manufactures Weruva in facilities located in Thailand. While Weruva is not made in the USA, the USFDA does recognize the Thai FDA, making Weruva’s facility USFDA-certified.

Thailand is the world leader in producing food for people around the globe and provides the largest portion of fish consumed in the USA.

You can be sure that the quality of food Weruva offers is of the highest quality since pet foods produced in Thailand go through stricter testing than that of the USA.

Recall History of Weruva Dog Food

As of writing this article, Weruva has had only one case of a recall. The good thing about it is that it only affected the Australian line of their B.F.F. cat food line that seemed to make cats ill in 2017.

Since then the issue has been resolved, and Weruva has not had any recalls again, which is positive considering the company started in 2007 and is still a young pet food company.

Different Formulas/Options

While Weruva did start as a wet food brand for cats due to the owners of the company owning three rescue cats and not being able to find suitable foods for them the company had expanded to dog foods when the owners rescued their current dog.

Now dogs can also enjoy the high-quality foods Weruva has to offer. Weruva makes both wet and dry food for dogs, so we will go over both to help you find the right food for your dog.

Weruva Classic Dog

This is the wet food that Weruva started with when they developed their dog food formula line. It is their best-selling formula that puts your dog’s carnivorous needs first. It is high in animal proteins, healthy fats, low carbohydrates, and high moisture content for an appealing taste.

The majority of the wet foods follow the same recipe, the main ingredients changing being the animal proteins used.

Speaking of ingredients, you should be able to see the majority of the ingredients in these can foods that look so good you might even be tempted to try it. The available flavors are:

  • Paw Lickin’ Chicken with Chicken Breast in Gravy
  • Funky Chunky Chicken Soup with Pumpkin
  • Steak Frites with Beef, Pumpkin & Sweet Potato in Gravy
  • Wok the Dog with Chicken, Beef & Pumpkin in Gravy
  • Jammin’ Salmon with Chicken & Salmon in Pumpkin Soup
  • Bed & Breakfast with Chicken, Egg, Pumpkin & Ham in Gravy
  • Amazon Liver with Chicken & Chicken Liver in Pumpkin Soup
  • Grandma’s Chicken Soup with Chicken & Veggies
  • Peking Ducken with Chicken & Duck in Gravy
  • Green Eggs & Chicken with Chicken, Pumpkin, Greens & Egg in Gravy
  • Cirque de la Mar with Tuna & Veggies in Pumpkin Soup
  • Marbella Paella with Mackerel & Pumpkin in Aspic
  • Hot Dayam with Luscious Lamb in Gelee
  • That’s My Jam with Chicken & Lamb in Gelee

Dogs in the Kitchen

Weruva believes that if your dog could cook for themselves, then they would most likely make meals with a variety of meats, vegetables, and textures that would satisfy their palettes.

The proteins vary from land and sea proteins and include a variety of healthy vegetables, fats, and moisture content to keep their bodies healthy. These wet foods come as either a can or pouch. The available flavors are:

  • Love me Tender with Chicken Breast
  • Fowl Bowl with Chicken & Turkey
  • Funk in the Trunk with Chicken & Pumpkin
  • The Double Dip with Beef & Wild-Caught Salmon
  • Goldie Lox with Chicken & Wild-Caught Salmon
  • Lamburgini with Lamb & Pumpkin

Caloric Harmony

This is one of the two dry food options that Weruva offers. A Canadian BRC-Approved Facility manufactures this dry food and the recipes are high in animal protein, packed with plant-based probiotics, and include pumpkin to aid in digestion by adding fiber.

There are also grain-free and gluten-free options, in case your dog was to have any food sensitivities. The available flavors are:

  • Chicken Dinner with Pumpkin
  • Chicken, Turkey & Salmon Dinner with Pumpkin
  • Venison & Salmon Meal Dinner with Pumpkin

Caloric Melody

This is the second dry food option that Weruva offers in its dog food line. It follows similar processing, cooking, and ingredients to that of the Caloric Harmony line.

The main difference with Caloric Melody is that it contains less animal protein to make it a more affordable dry dog food option. The available flavors are:

  • Chicken Dinner with Lentils
  • Chicken, Turkey & Salmon Dinner with Lentils
  • Lamb Dinner with Lentils

Key Ingredients in Weruva

Let’s take a closer look at some of the key ingredients that make Weruva dog food unique.

Protein

Weruva uses a variety of animal proteins in their formulas. An animal protein is almost always the first ingredient to ensure that your dog has access to an optimal protein source to benefit their bodies greatly.

You can be sure that your dog will enjoy the meaty taste and you will enjoy seeing what exactly you are feeding your dog. The proteins Weruva uses are:

  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Salmon
  • Pork
  • Duck
  • Tuna
  • Mackerel
  • Lamb
  • Turkey
  • Venison
  • Egg

Fats

All of the fats Weruva has in their foods comes naturally from the animal proteins used. That means that your dog will have a more natural source of fats that will benefit their bodies rather than risk your dog gaining excess weight.

Carbohydrates

Weruva has a range of 1%-27% of carbohydrates, depending on the flavor of food. Weruva uses easy to digest carbohydrates that produce a natural calories content source for your dog. They also make sure that the carbohydrates do not add excess sugars that your dog’s body do not need.

Antioxidants

Weruva uses a healthy blend of fruits and vegetables that you can see in their wet foods. This provides your dog with an optimal source of vitamins and minerals that they can absorb naturally rather than needed outside sources to provide them with those much-needed nutrients.

Introduce your dog to the flavors of Weruva by adding Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken with Chicken Breast in Gravy to their dry foods.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 10%
  • Fat Content— 1.40%
  • Carbohydrates— 1.60%
  • Fiber Content— 0.50%

Weruva is known for using ingredients you can see in their wet foods. Since chicken is the first ingredient on the list, you will see plenty of chicken pieces mixed in with a delicious chicken broth.

Even though the chicken broth will satisfy your dog’s taste buds, it will not provide them with any nutritional benefits. Another downside of this wet food is that it does not include any fruits or vegetables.

Instead, outside added supplements are mixed in to give your dog the essential nutrients that their bodies need.

There is also a lack of fiber within the wet food which means your dog could have a softer stool. However, this wet food does have a low-fat content, so your dog should not gain excessive weight when eating this formula.

The high animal protein in this formula is sure to help keep your dog’s body healthy and active whether it is being given to your dog alone or mixed with their dry food.

Pros

  • Chicken is the first ingredient in the formula
  • Contains no artificial ingredients, colors, or preservatives
  • Uses no questionable ingredients
  • Comes in 5.5OZ and 14OZ cans

Cons

  • Contains no fruits or vegetables, which dogs need for a natural vitamin and mineral source
  • Contains potato starch, which has little to no nutritional content for dogs

While Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken with Chicken Breast in Gravy could do with more vegetables added to the mix, it is still an above-average wet food to feed your dog.

2. Weruva Fowl Ball

Weruva Fowl Ball answers the question of what your dog would make with their favorite poultry ingredients.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 8%
  • Fat Content— 2%
  • Carbohydrates— 2%
  • Fiber Content— 0.50%

Dogs need a high animal protein source to sustain their bodies better. Weruva knows this and makes sure that your dog will have all the protein that they need.

This particular formula combines deboned chicken and turkey in easy to eat shreds that you can add on top of your dog’s dry food. The chicken broth adds extra flavor and moisture that will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

While some wet foods you can feed to your dog in place of dry food this formula is, unfortunately, not one of them, as it lacks fruits and vegetables which supplies your dog with needed nutrients.

It would be better to use this formula as a protein boost in your dog’s diet if they are eating dry food with a less than average animal protein content.

You will be happy to know, though, that this formula contains no GMOs, MSGs, Carrageenan, or any other harmful chemicals. Even the pouch the food is placed in is BPA-free.

Pros

  • Minimally processed ingredients
  • Provides a high animal protein source
  • Grain-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, and corn free
  • Comes in a 2.8OZ pouch and 10OZ can

Cons

  • Chicken broth is the first ingredient, which provides no nutritional content for your dog
  • Contains no vegetables or fruits

When you open the packet of Weruva Fowl Ball, you will be able to see every ingredient and may even be tempted to try it for yourself.

Weruva Dogs in the Kitchen Funk in the Trunk is the perfect food topper that will have your dog begging for more.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 8%
  • Fat Content— 1.50%
  • Carbohydrates— 2.50%
  • Fiber Content— 0.50%

Do not let the name fool you, Weruva Dogs in the Kitchen Funk in the Trunk will not add extra weight to your dog. Instead, this formula can benefit your dog’s digestive health. Chicken is a common protein that is easy for dogs to digest and even easier for them to enjoy.

The chicken is slow-cooked so the meat shreds easily for your dog to enjoy. But this formula only uses one vegetable in the mix meaning that outside supplements need to be added to make up for the lack of fruits and vegetables. On the plus side, though, the included fruit is a pumpkin.

Pumpkin is great for dogs who tend to have sensitive stomachs or need a healthy boost in their digestion. It is not a puree either; you can see the cubes of pumpkin that were slow-cooked and mixed in with the chicken shreds.

If you are considering transitioning your dog to Weruva, then use this formula as the pumpkin will help soothe upset stomachs and keep your dog’s stool firm throughout the food transition.

Pros

  • Free of grains, corn, wheat, and gluten
  • Contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or colors
  • Has no hormones, antibiotics, or other harmful chemicals
  • Comes in 2.8OZ pouches and 10OZ cans

Cons

  • Chicken broth is the first ingredient for high content of no nutritional content
  • Only contains one vegetable
  • Uses chicken, so not ideal for dogs with poultry allergies

Each flavor-packed bite of Weruva Funk in the Trunk will provide your dog with the protein source their stomach and bodies crave.

Provide your dog with an appetizing and nutrient satisfying meal by feeding them Weruva Caloric Harmony.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 38%
  • Fat Content— 13%
  • Carbohydrates— 31%
  • Fiber Content— 5%

By using both chicken and chicken meal, your dog will have access to a high animal protein source that will supply their bodies with the nutrients needed to stay healthy.

This formula contains many legumes and vegetables, which is a major improvement when compared to other formulas in Weruva’s dry food line. Lentils provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and even easy to digest plant proteins.

Chickpeas are an easy to digest carbohydrate source that also provides fiber and protein. Green peas are also easy to digest carbohydrate rich in plant protein.

Your dog should get a good balance of both animal and plant proteins that benefit your dog rather than risk them not getting the essential nutrients they need.

As another plus, pumpkin, and seaweed are added into this formula to promote healthy digestion. While some of the vegetable and fruit ingredients could be questionable, you can be sure that only the highest quality of animal proteins are used in this formula.

Pros

  • Contains more vegetables when compared to other Weruva dry food options
  • Deboned chicken is the first ingredient
  • Contains no grains or potatoes
  • Come in 4lb, 12lb, and 24lb bag options

Cons

  • Contains tomato pomace and apple pomace, which is a questionable ingredient
  • Uses chicken so not ideal for dogs with allergies to proteins

It does not take much to provide your dog with a balanced meal. All it takes is feeding your dog Weruva Caloric.

If you want to feed your dog Weruva but are on a budget feed them Weruva Caloric Melody Chicken, Turkey & Salmon Dinner with Lentils as it provides your dog with the essentials they need at an affordable price for you.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 36%
  • Fat Content— 13%
  • Carbohydrates— 33%
  • Fiber Content— 5%

Dogs deserve a meal that fills their stomach and maintains its overall health. The chicken stands as the first ingredient for an optimal animal protein source, but the next two ingredients are meal products.

While not all animal meal products are bad, it is unfortunate that the direct meat sources are the seventh and eight ingredients.

While lentils are rich in fiber, B vitamins, and minerals, it is high up on the ingredient list. This means that the plant protein lentils provide are potentially being used in place of animal proteins. But, as with all Weruva dry food formulas, pumpkin, seaweed, and salmon oil are included.

These ingredients aid in your dog’s digestive health while helping their skin and fur. This formula is an above-average dry food that gives your dog the essentials they need even if it lacks indirect sources for some vitamins and minerals.

Pros

  • Potato and grain-free
  • Helps support your dog’s body from adulthood and on
  • Comes in 4lb, 12lb, and 24lb bag options

Cons

  • Uses questionable pomace ingredients
  • Not ideal for dogs with poultry allergies

While the price is lower Weruva Caloric does not skip out on the quality Weruva is known for.

Weruva Jammin helps your dog’s health both inside and out.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 8%
  • Fat Content— 1.20%
  • Carbohydrates— 1.30%
  • Fiber Content— 0.50%

Weruva Jammin’ Salmon with Chicken & Salmon in Pumpkin Soup provides a mix of some of the best ingredients for your dog. Chicken, even though it is a common food allergen, is an excellent protein source. Salmon is another great animal protein source.

Salmon provides dogs with Omega-3 fatty acids which help your dog have healthier skin and a shinier coat. It is unfortunate that it is the fourth ingredient in the formula since this means there is not enough salmon in the wet food.

The pumpkin soup, though, offers your dog multiple benefits. It is easy to digest carbohydrate sources, offers a rich source of fiber, and supplies a healthy supply of various minerals.

It also makes the wet food taste even better for dogs. This wet food formula has three other vegetables in the mix: tomatoes, peas, and sweet potatoes.

While these vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, fibers, and antioxidants they are still not enough to fully give your dog the nutrients that they need.

To make up for the lack of natural minerals, Weruva adds outside supplements. All-in-all, this Weruva wet food formula is an above-average wet food that benefits your dog’s overall health.

Pros

  • Contains no artificial ingredients, colors, or preservatives
  • Has no added hormones or antibiotics
  • Ideal for dogs who have stomach sensitivities
  • Comes in 5.5OZ and 14OZ cans

Cons

  • Contains only a few necessary vegetable and fruits for your dogs
  • Has a high moisture content, so dogs risk gaining excess water weight

Your dog will be licking their lips at the healthy and satisfying taste of Weruva Jammin.

7. Weruva Venison

While Weruva is best known for its high-quality wet foods, their dry food formulas, like Weruva Caloric Harmony Venison, is just as beneficial to your dog.

Key Features

  • Protein Content— 34%
  • Fat Content— 13%
  • Carbohydrates— 35%
  • Fiber Content— 3.50%

This formula of Weruva dry food is ideal for dogs with food allergies or in need of a diet that helps their digestive health. Venison is one of the best proteins that help dogs with allergies maintain healthy bodies.

The addition of venison meal makes up for the rendering that normally reduces the quality of meats by putting back the lost essential nutrients. Your dog will also graciously eat two fish protein sources, salmon and herring.

The salmon meal will provide your dog with Omega-3 fatty acids that help their skin and coat stay healthy while the herring meal adds other fatty acids that boost your dog’s body health.

Both the pumpkin and seaweed used in this formula keep your dog’s digestion in top conditions.

The only downside is the use of pomace ingredients, which are the leftovers of processed ingredients.

These ingredients can be questionable in quality and nutritional content, but Weruva has not had any issues before, so the sources of these pomace ingredients may be trusted.

Pros

  • Offers dogs three animal protein sources
  • Uses easy to digest carbohydrate sources
  • Potato free
  • Comes in 4lb, 12lb, and 24lb bag options

Cons

  • Contains tomato pomace, which is an inexpensive by-product from processing tomatoes
  • Contains canola oil, which is considered a controversial pet food ingredient

Combine Weruva wet food with Weruva Venison for a nutrient pack diet your dog’s body will flourish with.

Bottom Line

Weruva dog food offers you all the essentials that your dog needs to have a healthy mind and body. It is highly palatable, focuses on the animal protein being the main protein source, and makes sure that your dog has enough hydration in their foods.

This brand of food does tend to run up a bit in price, but the price matches the quality ingredients and quality processing standards that Weruva aims to keep consistent.

Even though the company is young, there are high hopes for it to continue being a high-quality dog food brand aimed at keeping your four-legged friend happy and healthy longer. For all other brands and breed specific foods check out the detailed catalog here.
